Rules are for breaking


Rules are for breaking right? Well, I agree. And it’s important to understand why you’re breaking a rule before you do, so that you break it well.


You’ve probably heard the most common rule – hang your art with the main subject at eye height. Right? But have you actually thought about where eye height is? Eye height may be different for different people AND may be different in different rooms depending on the function of the space.

  • Obviously, if you are only 5 feet tall your eye height will be different to someone who is 7 and a half feet tall. When considering a personal space, like your home office or master bedroom, your art should be placed to suit you – the person who enjoys the space. A master bath also fits this category – position it best for your eye height.
  • In a guest bedroom or bathroom place art to please the masses. This is a space that will predominately be used by others, so consider average height when positioning artwork in this space. Same goes for powder rooms used by your guests.
  • Kid’s bedrooms may be different again. Remember, the purpose of art is to enjoy it, so think about where your kids' eye height is. Little people will benefit from their artwork being positioned much lower than in other circumstances. Or maybe your kids have bunks and loft beds, in which case their eye height may be different again.

  • Consider your eye height in a lounge room where you’ll be sitting. Generally, in a space like this, art should be positioned lower.

Tip: try one hand above a couch or sofa.

  • You’ll also be sitting in a dining room, so consider that when positioning art here too. Make sure you can enjoy it while you break bread.
  • Hallways and entrances see a lot of guests and they are generally standing on their way by, so consider average height when positioning artwork in this space.
  • Kitchens are said to be the heart of a home. In this day and age kitchens are multi-purpose and for all family members and guests to enjoy. In this space be guided by the function of the space that is looking at the artwork. Artwork placed over a bench that is predominantly viewed by those seated at an island needs to suit their eye level, where as artwork on a wall opposite to your prep area may be predominantly viewed by yourself while standing.

Tip: In the kitchen keep art away from heat and water. A good place would be above a computer / homework bench, or in an open space above lower cabinets.
